Mistakes from the beginning set up a path to failure
Not to mention the corruption we hung our hats on with the Afghan “government”. Though the Taliban had harbored Bin Laden, they themselves were no threat to the U.S. We should have been just as willing to negotiate/work with them as the Northern Alliance. The Taliban could not be defeated as long as Pakistan was letting them cross the border.
Though they would have been minimal value militarily (we had plenty of firepower so that was not a need) we should have been more encouraging of other countries and not in a marginal way. They would have allowed the effort to seem more international and less just U.S.
Just those two things would have given a much more realistic chance, though I am not sure the end result is that much difference.
